Environmentalism and environmentalists are advocates for the preservation, restoration and improvement of the natural environment and may considered as the effort by humans to control our own pollution. This has inspired new concepts like Land Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Biodiversity, Ecology, and the Biophilia hypothesis.
The problem we are facing now is that our current laws to protect and conserve the environment in the name of environmentalism are in danger of being watered down, reduced or even altogether eliminated by big multinational corporations whom place record breaking profits and greed over corporate social responsibilities and the environmentalism movement may be in serious danger.
EnvironmentalismIn 2010 we all remember the Republican takeover of Congress and states across the nation, however, how many of you realize than since they took over in congress by October, 2011 they voted 168 times to undercut clean air and clean water laws not to mention hindering efforts to limit global warming, protect public lands and take safeguards against future oil spills. The Republicans used to help support environmentalism and help protect the environment, but in a N.Y. Times article, it is now the G.O.P. Vs. the Environment. The Democratic controlled Senate is more or less shooting down most of these attempts to destroy environmental protections and environmentalism, however if they lose control in 2012 that may quickly change, which is why we need to look to politicians that will continue the effort to protect the environment and support environmentalism. Why the shift away from environmentalism many may ask for the GOP? They now claim that regulations cost jobs, and are backed by big oil and big coal interests in the war against the environment, not to mention lobbyists and the Citizens United Ruling allowing for corporations to make unlimited donations through PAC’s (Political Action Committees). Lobbyists and now Corporations are spending a whole lot of money not just to undermine the environmental protections we have in place, but the climate change science as well. They even are going so far as to bring climate change denial curriculum into public school science classrooms! The EPA is also under attack from the GOP and now instead of regulating environmental safeguards, they are attempting to roll back those protections with deregulation after deregulation attempt, not even to mention the fact that all of the 2012 GOP presidential hopefuls deny climate change science altogether, giving us a dim view of the future should they ever come to power. Giving the current set of circumstances, I would say that we facing a grim future. Are they now adopting more of the Ayn Rand garbage which is being spewed out by Tea Party members now? According to Ayn Rand on Environmentalism and Animal Rights,
This whole anti-environmentalist movement has been ongoing for decades, but now it has reached it’s pinnacle, with the EPA’s Regulating Authority Targeted by Republicans, EPA funding cuts outlined by GOP, House GOP spending bill prohibits funding for EPA climate regulations, which if these all went through the senate would effectively take away the teeth of the EPA, making it so they can’t even do their jobs due to a lack of funding. This would in essence totally remove the power to enforce any existing laws and to throw away any plans to implement new ones to protect the environment, giving every psychopath corporation the green light to do as they please regardless of the environmental consequences, which is exactly what they are hoping for.
“Observe that in all the propaganda of the ecologists—amidst all their appeals to nature and pleas for “harmony with nature”—there is no discussion of man’s needs and the requirements of his survival. Man is treated as if he were an unnatural phenomenon. Man cannot survive in the kind of state of nature that the ecologists envision—i.e., on the level of sea urchins or polar bears. . . .
In order to survive, man has to discover and produce everything he needs, which means that he has to alter his background and adapt it to his needs. Nature has not equipped him for adapting himself to his background in the manner of animals. From the most primitive cultures to the most advanced civilizations, man has had to manufacture things; his well-being depends on his success at production. The lowest human tribe cannot survive without that alleged source of pollution: fire. It is not merely symbolic that fire was the property of the gods which Prometheus brought to man. The ecologists are the new vultures swarming to extinguish that fire.”
Environmentalism isn’t just some feel good hippies smoking weed, it is about us coming together to protect our environment. It is sub-categorized as ‘saving the whales’, or ‘saving the Dolphins’, but whether they like it or not, our environment is temperamental and all the intricacies of it aren’t even known yet. With our pollution output at biblical proportions, we are harming our own home, which is Earth. The Earth will survive, but mankind may not the way we are proceeding. There is an intricate balance that must be upheld if we are to maintain life as we know it on our home, planet earth, and environmentalism tries to embrace that theory. We are in danger of setting off a series of events for which no amount of money or technology may save us from. Our water supplies are dwindling and safe, clean drinking water is becoming endangered as the clean water: water shortage crisis worsens as climate change is progressing.
Famine and hunger are another aspect as environmentalists we should address, as climate change is leading to droughts of biblical proportions, and leading to food shortages. The list goes on and on. Why do we insist on poisoning not only our planet, but ourselves just to make a few blood soaked dollars off the backs of some innocent people from across the globe who are now paying the price for our disregard towards environmentalism and our planet to this point?I ask you this, my friends, are we that vain, are we that insensitive, or are we just that stupid to think that environmentalism is just some garbage? I think not, but there is a growing number that think it is. We shouldn’t, no, we must not allow them to throw away all the gains we have fought hard for over the years. DO NOT LET THEM ENGAGE IN THE WHOLESALE DESTRUCTION OF YOURS AND MINE OR OUR PLANET IN THE NAME OF GREED!
We know what we must do going forward, and the lines are being drawn in the sand as we speak. As for Environmentalism and what happened to environmentalism and what we can do to save it, we must make the effort, and not allow them to buy out our environment so they can use it and our own backyards as their own private toxic waste dumps! Peace my friends and godspeed!
