This moral and ethics statement was prepared in the recognition of the fact that our nation has a moral obligation to address climate change in light of the fact that:
1) Climate change is a real, dangerous, and rapidly worsening problem with deep moral implications.
2) The US has done little to reduce its contributions to the crisis
The statement made by the group asserts that the United States has both a duty and a moral duty to prevent unjustifiable suffering and death amongst current and future generations in both the United States and across the globe. This moral obligation also requires that the US acts swiftly and significantly to reduce our contributions to the crisis at hand.
The U.S. has tragically been a failure when it comes to taking a stance and proactive measures on climate change largely due to the fact that it has been solely based upon economic self-interest. Opponents of any such actions to reduce of emissions claim that the costs to jobs and the overall economy are too high. Supporters of proactive measures of curbing our harmful emissions and reducing them significantly claim it will create jobs and be good for the economy. I guess you can’t have your cake and eat it too, at least not in this case.
The problem that is being overlooked and ignored in the debate are the moral implications of climate change. A group of 27 concerned individuals from both conservative and liberal organizations and constituencies from across the U.S. came together in early 2011 to form the Climate Ethics Campaign. This campaign seeks to make the message they are sending is heard loud and clear to our leaders at every level of society that when they decide on how to proceed to any climate change issues or bills, that we must act on our nations long held moral principles which is to protect our current and future generations from unjustifiable suffering and death, and to act in a justifiable and equitable manner, and to protect Earth’s natural systems that support all life, including ours.
That led to the creation of their statement, “Statement of Our Nation’s Moral Obligation to Address Climate Change“, which is seeking signatures of endorsement on the statement from people of all walks of life, all political parties, all religions, and all other leaders from the public, private, academic, and non-profit sectors nationwide. In essence, they conclude that our moral obligations must hold equal or greater weight to economic or national self-interest. To become a participant you can sign the statement here, or launch a launch a campaign of your own.
Whether or not you put your signature on the Statement of Our Nation’s Moral Obligation to Address Climate Change, do what you can to help the cause. You don’t necessarily need to be a leader or some high executive to sign this statement either by the way, regular people may also sign. It is for everyone to read and sign! Peace my friends, and keep fighting the good fight, which in this case is the moral imperative.
