Formula Recall For Similac Formula Which May Have Contained Beetle Parts

Similac Recall 2010, as a formula recall for Similac formula which may have contained beetle parts has been issued as millions of containers may be contaminated with beetle parts and larvae. The major pharmaceutical company Abbott Laboratories reported on Wednesday, 9/22/2010 that the voluntary infant formula recall may affect upwards of five million of their Similac-brand powder formulas sold in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and various Caribbean countries.

This recall DOES NOT affect any liquid formulas so no need to worry if you have the liquid formula.

Abbott Laboratories said the products may contain small beetle parts or larvae, which could cause stomach ache and digestion problems and create eating problems for young infants. A company spokeswoman said Abbott discovered the insects last week in the Sturgis, Michigan manufacturing plant. “We immediately shut down that one area and began an investigation,” said Abbott’s spokeswoman Melissa Brotz. “We’re in the process of resolving it now.” Abbott currently manufactures Similac at several U.S. sites. This recall mat result in a loss of one hundred million dollars or more in revenue. The recalls came after two consumers complained of contamination and the inspection at the plant in Michigan. The recalls were also made before the consumer reports were made public, according to their spokeswoman. After their testing, they found that more than 99.8 percent of the products they tested were negative for contamination. Thus, all the powdered formulas produced in Michigan are being recalled to cover any remote possibilities of contamination Brotz added.

The Similac recall of these powder infant formulas includes:

· Certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers.
· Certain Similac powder product lines offered in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans.

Abbott Laboratories also issued this statement: “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat”.
