Global warming is the continued rise in the earth’s surface temperature. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the temperature increase we’ve experienced from the 1950’s to today is primarily due to the increased amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The rise in greenhouse gases through the ages also correlates to a rise in average global temperatures. Human endeavors like forest elimination and the burning of fossil fuels are some of the major offenders for the increase in these gases. The primary greenhouse gases that are contributing to the earth’s temperature rise are carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane.
The earth goes through cycles and global warming is a part of those cycles. What makes the current trend of global warming an issue among environmentalists and scientists is the rate that temperatures and the concentrations of greenhouse gases are rising. These increases can result in a rapid change in climate patterns that may be detrimental to us and our current way of life.
Causes of Global Warming and Climate Change
Man’s lifestyle changes and behaviors over the past century have taken a toll on the earth. Early on, increases in farming and the cutting trees to increase farmlands have had a negative effect on the planet. As our quality of life have advanced and improved with newer technologies, the harm we have done to the planet has also advanced and become more destructive.
The discoveries of coal and petroleum to run our power plants, transportation, and just about everything else has also increased the amount of harmful gases released into the earth’s atmosphere. The atmosphere is becoming unbalanced with too much carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane which leads to what we all know as the Greenhouse Effect.
Today, with cities expanding, economies like China and India growing, urbanization sprawling ceaselessly, and population growth, great increases in all types of pollution have placed a greater strain on the already damaged earth’s atmosphere and environment. All you need to do is look around and see that the adverse effects of progress and industrialization to the earth are obvious, even to the naked eye today.
Taking Action to Prevent Global Warming and Save The Planet
The first step towards caring for, and healing our precious environment is the acknowledgment of these current issues with our planet. To be conscious of the current environmental dilemma makes us more conscientious of our actions. It is only through this knowledge of these problems and causes of them that we will be able to act more appropriately in regards to our ailing planet, and begin to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem in helping save the planet and help it heal.
Mankind is highly resourceful and creative, which can be both a good thing and a bad thing as we are finding out. If we were able to improve our quality of life with the unique inventions we currently enjoy and benefit from, we should also be able to develop and implement solutions to the current issues stemming from climate change. It only takes a conscious effort to think about and care for the environment. If we are aware of how the earth is affected by our actions, we will be able to change those actions and repair the damages we’ve inflicted to our earth and help save the planet. Next time you drive, maybe you will think differently and decide to walk, or take the bus, or ride a bike. Maybe we will turn the heat down in the winter and dress warmer. With this knowledge that the earth is a fragile place, and the current lifestyle we enjoy imperils her, we might think twice about keeping every light and appliance on in our homes or setting the air conditioner to 70 degrees on a hot summer day. Isn’t that quite the paradox by the way, how the excessive use of modern technologies created that heat rise to begin with, then we compensate by making the situation worse with those technologies. It’s never too late to start giving back to our environment, so to speak, and making an effort to curb our harmful ways. With Earth Day 2010 approaching on April 22nd, 2010, now is the time to stop acting selfish and start acting for our earth and environment. We only have one earth and like what they say, we are the stewards of the earth so lets reduce the greenhouse gases. We hope what we can do to prevent global warming save the planet has raised your awareness and that together we can start acting responsibly towards the environment and planet now and help minimize the potential effects of climate change.
