Map for the First Total Lunar Eclipse June 15 2011 Longer Than Normal Not Visible In US Canada

The first total lunar eclipse on June 15, 2011 will last an unusually long time, a rare celestial treat for a wide swath of the globe, except if you happen to live in the US or Canada. Unfortunately, for those of you in North America, you will be left out of Wednesday’s lunar event, which will be visible from the beginning to end from eastern Africa, central Asia, the Middle East and western Australia, that is, of course, if the weather cooperates.

The period when Earth’s shadow completely blocks the moon, which is commonly referred to as totality, will last a unusually longer 1 hour and 40 minutes. The last time that the moon was covered for this long was in July 2000, when it lasted for 1 hour and 47 minutes, 7 minutes longer than this years event. Rio+20 Report Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing

The upcoming Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development for low-carbon prosperity and a sustainable planet sent out a blueprint with 56 recommendations yesterday in the Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing report just released.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon yesterday called for action on a new blueprint for creating a sustainable planet, a just society and a growing economy, stressing that the current path will not lead to a fair and resilient future for the world’s people. He stated: “We need to chart a new, more sustainable course for the future, one that strengthens equality and economic growth while protecting our planet. Sustainable development offers our best chance to change course.”

Speaking at the launch in Addis Ababa of the report prepared by his High-level Panel on Global Sustainability, Mr. Ban stressed that sustainable development is a top priority for his second term of office prior to the upcoming Rio+20 conference. NASA Ranks 2011 Ninth-Warmest Year Ever Recorded

According to NASA, 2011 ranked ninth warmest ever recorded and even added a temperature animation video! The global average surface temperature in 2011 was the ninth warmest since 1880, according to NASA scientists. The finding continues a trend in which nine of the 10 warmest years in the modern meteorological record have occurred since the year 2000.

NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York, which monitors global surface temperatures on an ongoing basis, released an updated analysis that shows temperatures around the globe in 2011 compared to the average global temperature from the mid-20th century. The comparison shows how Earth continues to experience warmer temperatures than several decades ago. The average temperature around the globe in 2011 was 0.92 degrees F (0.51 C) warmer than the mid-20th century baseline. Snowy Owls Rare Migration Further South Remains Mystery To Experts

Snowy Owls are migrating en-mass further south this season, with some sightings as far south as Oklahoma! There have been sightings of thousands of the snow-white birds, which stand 2 feet tall with 5-foot wingspans, have been spotted from coast to coast, feeding in farmlands of Idaho, roosting on rooftops in Montana, sailing over golf courses in Missouri and over the shorelines in Massachusetts.

Bird enthusiasts this year report elevated levels of these iconic birds from the Arctic flying into the lower 48 states this winter in a mass southern migration that leading owl researcher Denver Holt, head of the Owl Research Institute in Montana called “unbelievable. What we’re seeing now it’s unbelievable,” he said.

A small of the iconic owls fly south from their Arctic breeding grounds each winter but rarely do such vast quantities venture so far away even amid large-scale, periodic southern migrations known as irruptions. Continue Reading Snowy Owls Rare Migration Further South Remains Mystery Here

Artificial Christmas Trees and Your Families Health There are some health issues which many might not be aware of with these!

Many people get artificial Christmas trees because they have allergies, or otherwise find that real trees are not acceptable in their households, but artificial trees can pose some health risks that go beyond just allergies that many of us may not be aware of. When it comes to fake trees and your health, think about some of the following issues before you purchase one or bring it out from storage.

Chemical Warnings

Some fake trees are required to have a label warning about their chemical content. The label warns about the tree’s chemical content, noting lead specifically and its tendency to cause birth defects. It concludes with instructions to wash your hands after handling. Continue Reading Artificial Christmas Trees and Your Families Health Here
