Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) & Koch Brothers, Err Heartland Institute 6th Annual Conference for Climate Change Deniers

The sixth annual international conference of climate change deniers, brought to you by the Koch Brothers, commonly referred to as the Heartland Institute convened Thursday at the Washington Marriot Wardman Park Hotel. There were featured presentations from the likes of Patrick Michaels, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, which is a so called ‘green movement’ think tank, but in reality it is a Koch brothers front to instigate and spread climate change denial. He of course, argues that humans have a limited to no impact at all on climate change. Michaels stated in his pressentation that public figures are overestimating the extent to which climate change can be attributed to human beings, which in turn is leading to costly, ineffective polices that will not help reverse the warming trend. Michaels, a self-described “luke-warmer,” had his research called into question earlier this year, when Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), ranking member on the House Energy and Commerce committee, asked fellow Republicans to investigate how much of his research funding was coming from the oil industry.

Another of the prominent climate change deniers, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK), who insists we are in a ‘cooling period’, was set to kick off the event on Thursday, but had to cancel due to a cold. Back on April 21st, 2011, Inhofe told Fox News host Brian Kilmeade’s that hydraulic fracturing, or fracking has “never poisoned anyone” nor even contaminated groundwater. He also claimed that there was nothing to worry about with fracking. Inhofe’s biggest contributors to his political career are, of course, and I’m sure you guessed it, the oil and gas industry. During the last election cycle in 2010, oil and gas industry companies gave him over $450K alone, even though he wasn’t even up for re-election. Earth rising on the horizon..

Global warming and climate change have been in the news more lately with all the recent extreme weather events. The image to the left is just a glimpse of earth from orbit during a solar eclipse, and just goes to show how much of an impact that the sun has on our planet. The potential for disaster on our fragile planet is high, even before we existed, let alone some of the things we have done. The possibilities are nearly endless, and maybe the sun gets hotter, or the Earth’s rotation changes speed, or our axis shifts by a tenth of a degree. These could all create major problems which could very likely threaten life on this planet as we know it. Another concern, which is at the forefront of most everyone’s agenda lately, or which should be is what impact, or byproducts of our living on this planet has caused. Wildfires in California raging

While our leaders debate, time may be running out according to the experts. Who does what, who did what, and of course, how much will that cost seems to be the theme, but little progress is made. The real question should be how much will doing nothing cost us, ultimately. I myself believe that the cost of doing nothing will surmount any costs of trying to reduce, and ultimately eliminate our detrimental ways. There are more than just climate change issues at hand as well, but the climate change aspect just exasperates all other issues at hand, with the foremost being food and water supplies I imagine.
