Groundhog Day 2011

We anxiously await Punxsutawney Phil for his appearance on February 2 2011

This Groundhog Day 2011 is right around the corner, as in exactly 1 day, February arrives, which means this low echelon holiday is right around the corner for us. Let’s be blunt. When it comes to Groundhog Day, there are two vocal camps, one of which holds this unheralded holiday to be one of the most, if not the most boring and least celebrated and recognized holidays that we have. I myself, am slightly partial to the holiday myself, and watch Groundhog Day on DVD every year to celebrate. For this holiday in 2011 there will, of course, be no exception to the watching of the Bill Murray classic movie. After a few months of dreary weather we can look forward to the little varmint declaring that winter will soon be over, or we will have another 6 weeks of the dreary wintry weather to deal with, at least in theory. How accurate his forecast is remains to be seen, but taken in context, it does have some credibility as animals are better judges of their environment than we are I imagine.

In real life, Punxsutawney, PA is the home of Phil and of the Groundhog Day activities of which this furry oracle is the center. Continue Reading Groundhog Day 2011 Here

Challenger Explosion Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster 25th Anniversary

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the Challenger Explosion, as the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster took place just 73 seconds after it’s launch into space January 28, 1986 at 11:38 AM EST, from launch pad 39B, with 7 astronauts aboard, including New Hampshire teacher Christa McAuliffe, a High School teacher. This addition of the teacher led to much exuberance and excitement for the launch, and also the televising of the event nationally. As millions watched, including many school classrooms, the launch was struck with disaster just 73 seconds into it’s flight.

The Challenger launch was nationally televised because of the addition of Christa McAuliffe. Shuttle launches were so commonplace and apparently thought to be so safe that the news media didn’t cover them for the most part anymore. NASA had set high hopes for the Teacher in Space program in that it would revive waning public interest into the program. McAuliffe was subsequently going to give live lessons from space to students on Earth, making it even more important to young children across the nation. No one anticipated or would have even thought the Challenger explosion would take place. Continue Reading Challenger Explosion Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster 25th Anniversary Here

We Wish A Happy New Year 2011 To All

We wish you all the best for 2011!

We would like to wish a Happy New Year 2011 to all our guests and friends past, present and future. 2010 has held many challenges for us all, due to severe weather, natural disasters, man made disasters and the lack of a consensus on reducing greenhouse gases. We have made some strides in 2010, but they aren’t in line with what needs to be done to keep climate change effects within manageable limits.

We do have hope on the horizon that the new year will bring a more determined sense of urgency to the South African Climate Summit with the weather starting to go off the hook so to speak. The US is on the verge of making reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, although that will still be a political struggle for the Obama Administration, but after Washington DC, and the rest of the Atlantic Seaboard got socked with this latest storm, it may sway some reluctant politicians to change their minds.
