Sustainable Energy - The Future is Clear We Must Move Forward With SE

Sustainable energy (SE), with it the future is clear, and much cleaner for that matter! No matter how you look at it, it is one of the most critical aspects of us moving forward and keeping our existing way of life intact. Unfortunately, technology dictates that we need energy, but the sources of that energy are optional. We need it to fuel our transportation, heat our homes, power our computers, phones, lights, and other necessities. Currently we derive only 13% of our total electricity from renewable sources, and that doesn’t include transportation! Currently fossil fuels power most of our energy sources, in the form of coal and oil, or gas. These fuels produce greenhouse gas emissions which is a byproduct of their combustion, which by itself isn’t that harmful, but in the massive quantities we are using it, it is a big problem.

As we previously said, some greenhouse gas emissions are part of the carbon cycle, and in limited use, it isn’t going to affect things all that much, but we have bypassed that plateau of safe usage a long time ago, and in combination with deforestation and other similar events, we are creating a big surplus of greenhouse gas emissions that the planet can’t absorb or cycle properly, thus we are altering the carbon cycle and the chemical makeup of our atmosphere, which is resulting in global warming, or now more commonly referred to as climate change. Is Electricity Renewable or Non-Renewable? How to Find out is Electricity Renewable or Non-Renewable

Is Electricity Renewable or Non-Renewable? How to Find out if your Electricity is Renewable or Non-Renewable

Is electricity renewable? How to find out if your electricity is renewable or non-renewable. As it currently stands, our current grid and sources of energy come from a wide variety of sources and is not limited to a single power source. To begin with, first we must determine what the renewable and non-renewable energy sources are before we can fully understand and answer this question with a degree of honesty.

Electricity ball

In short, electricity is largely produced by power stations burning fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. Nuclear fission can also be used to produce electricity from nuclear power plants. All these sources of energy are not renewable, which means that there is a finite, or limited amount of these fuels available in the world and when it is all used up, that’s it, there will be no more.

On the other hand, hydro, wind, tidal, geothermal, biomass, and solar power are all regarded as sustainable and renewable forms of energy because they aren’t finite and limited to available resources. We use the energy we obtain from these sources and it still keeps coming, it will not run out! Continue Reading Is Electricity Renewable or Non-Renewable? Solar Renewable Energy – Is Solar Energy Renewable and Can it Meet our Energy Needs?

Solar Renewable Energy - Is Solar Energy Renewable and Can it Meet our Energy Needs?

Solar renewable energy, is solar energy renewable is a question many people ask us. It is also a question which is both easy and hard to answer, if that makes sense. It is clean energy, and it is sustainable, and at face value it is renewable, as the sun shines every day. However it is not renewable in the traditional sense that it can’t be replaced or regrown, like biofuels. However it is fairly consistent, and is present every day for up to 16 hours a day in some areas, and at the northern and southern poles, sometimes is visible 24 hours a day, which lead to great opportunities to harness that energy. For more on this aspect, see Renewable and Non Renewable Energy Sources.

The Earth receives an incredible supply of solar energy. The sun, an average star, is a fusion reactor that has been burning over 4 billion years. It provides enough energy in one minute to supply the world’s energy needs for one year. In one day, it provides more energy than our current population would consume in 27 years. In fact, “The amount of solar radiation striking the earth over a three-day period is equivalent to the energy stored in all fossil energy sources.” Continue Reading Solar Renewable Energy – Is Solar Energy Renewable and Can it Meet our Energy Needs? Green Infrastructure – What is Green Infrastructure?

Green Infrastructure What is a Green Infrastructure?

Green Infrastructure What is a Green Infrastructure?

Green infrastructure – What is green infrastructure you ask? It is the interconnected network of open spaces and natural areas, such as greenways, wetlands, parks, forest preserves and native plant vegetation, that manages stormwater, reduces flooding risk and improves water quality naturally. This infrastructure usually costs less to install and maintain when compared to traditional forms of unnatural infrastructure. These natural infrastructure projects also can engage community cohesiveness by encouraging all community residents to get involved in the planning, planting and maintenance of the sites.

Green infrastructure (GI) is an approach that communities can choose to maintain healthy waters, provide multiple environmental benefits and support more sustainable communities. Unlike our current model of single-purpose gray stormwater infrastructure, which utilizes a network of pipes and drains to dispose of rainwater, a GI uses natural and native vegetation and soil to manage the rainwater right where it falls. By weaving natural processes into the built environment, green infrastructure provides not only stormwater management, but also flood mitigation, air quality management, and many more potential benefits. What is a Water Treatment Plant?

What is a water treatment plant

What is a water treatment plant

What is a water treatment plant you ask? Well they are facilities that treat water, ground water, or surface water from lakes, rivers, or even oceans and produce safe potable water ready for public use and consumption without fear of getting ill or dieing from drinking contaminated water. In essences they treat and clean water supplies and take out the contaminants making it safe for public consumption and use.

On the other hand, there are treatment plants for waste-water, which treat human waste and other contaminants which were created by us, as when you flush the toilet, that then goes to a treatment facility where it is treated so it is safe to go back into the environment without creating an environmental disaster. What they primarily do is take out all the solids and other contaminants and make it safe to re-enter the environment again. In what is a water treatment plant, we are primarily concerned with treatment facilities that make water supplies safe for human consumption and use.

At these facilities, they provide treatment of the water which includes the steps used to make water safer and remove water contaminants. These water can then be safely used as drinking water, industrial processes, medical and many other uses. The goal of all water treatment processes is to remove existing contaminants in the water, or reduce the concentration of such contaminants so the water becomes fit for human consumption, or safe for its other uses. One such use is returning water that has been used back into the natural environment without creating adverse ecological impacts, such as untreated sewage.

Environmental Policy What is an Environmental Policy and What We Need To Focus On

Environmental Policy - Expect More - Do More

Environmental Policy - Expect More - Do More

Environmental policy is any type of action consciously taken, or disregarded to manage human activities with a view to prevent, reduce, or mitigate harmful effects on nature and natural resources, and ensuring that man-made changes to the environment do not have harmful effects on humans or wildlife and nature itself.

It is useful for us to consider that environmental policy comprises two major terms: environment and policy. Environment primarily refers to the ecological dimension (ecosystems), but can also take account of the social dimension, or quality of life, and as an economic dimension correlating to resource management. The term policy can be defined as a course of action or principle adopted or proposed by a government, party, business or individual. That leaves us with the combined definition that an environmental policy focuses on problems arising from human impact on the environment, which retro-acts onto human society by having a negative impact on human values such as good health or a healthy, robust environment.

Environmental issues which are typically addressed by standard environmental policies include (but are not limited to) air and water pollution, waste management, ecosystem management, biodiversity protection, and the protection of natural resources, wildlife and endangered species. More recently however, environmental policy has expanded into the communication of environmental issues.
