Natural Gas From Shale: Shale Gas Extraction A Threat to Environmental and Human Health?

Natural gas from shale is gathered by a natural gas extraction method commonly referred to as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. This method of extraction is coming under fire as of late with some serious concerns over whether or not it is safe. There have been numerous reports of complaints from nearby residents whom have gas and other toxins in their water supplies, tap water starting on fire, and more recently fracking responsible for earthquakes may also be a proven side effect for this process of extraction.

Let us first explain more about gas from shale. Shale gas is a natural gas which is formed when getting trapped within shale rock formations. It has grown in importance in the U.S. over the last 10 years and around the world interest is spreading into the potential of this resource. Natural gas from shale is expected to supply nearly half of the production of this gas in North America by the year 2020. Experts also expect that the supply of natural gas from shale will greatly expand the worldwide energy supplies. Fracking Responsible For Earthquakes? Rare Ohio Earthquake May Prove It!

Is fracking responsible for earthquakes? The latest Ohio earthquake, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake in Ohio on New Year’s Eve did not occur naturally according to an expert hired by the state, and also stated that it may have been caused by high-pressure liquid injection related to oil and gas exploration and production by the process of fracking, the expert stated on Tuesday.

Ohio’s Department of Natural Resources on Sunday suspended operations at five deep well sites in Youngstown, Ohio, where the injection of water was taking place, while they evaluate seismological data from a rare quake in the area. The wells are each roughly 9,000 feet deep, or almost 2 miles, and are used to dispose of the waste water from oil and gas wells. The process is directly related to fracking, which is the controversial injection of chemical-laced water and sand into shale rocks to release the oil and gas contained in them. Critics of the fracking process say that the high pressure injection of the liquid causes seismic activity. Continue Reading Fracking Responsible For Earthquakes? Rare Ohio Earthquake May Prove It!
