Happy Earth Day Everybody!

Why Earth day do you ask? Many have asked the question why Earth Day since its inception on April 22nd, 1970 I imagine. Lets begin with a brief history on this historic event. This year, 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of the original day which was celebrated on April 22nd, 1970. Those were troubled times, with the Vietnam War, Anti-War Protests, and then April 22nd. Peace Building A Vision of World Peace in Mankind’s Fight For Survival

Peace Building A Vision of World Peace in Mankind's Fight For Survival - Can we battle nationalism and imperialism? - Is there any better time to start than this holiday season when peace on Earth and goodwill to man is the theme?

Some of us may have different ideas of world peace and of peace building, and these may seem like a vision that is unattainable to some, if not most of us at times. Nationalism and imperialism seem to be major obstacles in attaining these goals, as we will further review those two topics later on in the article. To begin with, from the Free Dictionary by Farlex.

  • Peace
    1. The absence of war or other hostilities.
    2. An agreement or a treaty to end hostilities.
    3. Freedom from quarrels and disagreement; harmonious relations.
    4. Public Security and order.
    5. Inner contentment, serenity (peace of mind).

The timing for this article seems truly important, as on one hand we have destructive weather stretching across the globe, and we have ongoing wars that seem to have no ongoing peace building attempts, and world peace is but a far reach at best. It is also the holidays, where peace on Earth and goodwill towards man is the theme, and that for most of us, we put our differences away for a few days, and celebrate the birth of Christ, a live together in peace and harmony for the most part. Some of us even manage a smile and some courtesies we normally would not bother with. Continue Reading Peace Building A Vision of World Peace in Mankind’s Fight For Survival Here

Filling barrel with water from hose, but is it safe?

Monday, March 22, 2010 which is today by the way, is the annual World Water Day Celebration, which for 2010 has chosen the theme ‘Clean Water for a Healthy World. This is due to the fact that every year, approximately 1,500 cubic kilometers of waste water is produced worldwide. These waste waters can be productively reused for both energy and irrigation, however it more often than not isn’t recycled into reusable water. Most developing nations only recycle or treat 20 percent of all the waste that is being discharged because of the lack of both resources and regulations. Both population and industrial expansion have increased the amounts of pollution and at the same time increased the demand for safer water. Because of these issues looming Continue Reading Today Is World Water Day 2010 – Clean Water for a Healthy World Here

Environmental Policy What is an Environmental Policy and What We Need To Focus On

Environmental Policy - Expect More - Do More

Environmental Policy - Expect More - Do More

Environmental policy is any type of action consciously taken, or disregarded to manage human activities with a view to prevent, reduce, or mitigate harmful effects on nature and natural resources, and ensuring that man-made changes to the environment do not have harmful effects on humans or wildlife and nature itself.

It is useful for us to consider that environmental policy comprises two major terms: environment and policy. Environment primarily refers to the ecological dimension (ecosystems), but can also take account of the social dimension, or quality of life, and as an economic dimension correlating to resource management. The term policy can be defined as a course of action or principle adopted or proposed by a government, party, business or individual. That leaves us with the combined definition that an environmental policy focuses on problems arising from human impact on the environment, which retro-acts onto human society by having a negative impact on human values such as good health or a healthy, robust environment.

Environmental issues which are typically addressed by standard environmental policies include (but are not limited to) air and water pollution, waste management, ecosystem management, biodiversity protection, and the protection of natural resources, wildlife and endangered species. More recently however, environmental policy has expanded into the communication of environmental issues. Environmental Technology What is Environmental Technology and How Can we Use it?

Environmental Technology Aspects

Environmental technology, or commonly referred to as envirotech, is also known as green technology, or greentech for short, and can also be termed clean technology, or cleantech for short is defined as the application of one or more of the following; environmental science, green chemistry, environmental monitoring and electronic devices which either monitor, model or conserve the natural environment and resources, and to minimize the negative impacts of human interactions with the environment. The term can also be used to describe sustainable or renewable energy generation technologies such as Photovoltaic’s (solar power), Wind Turbine’s (wind energy), Bioreactors, and other clean or renewable energy technologies. Sustainable development is at the core of environmental technologies. The term environmental technologies is also used to describe a class of electronic devices that can promote sustainable management of resources.

Currently we have wasteful energy policies, an overuse of natural resources, water supply shortages, man-made global climate change, and deforestation on massive scales are just some of the current issues experts say that we need to be address for humans as a species to achieve sustainable living on this planet. By the year 2025, an estimated addition of 2.9 billion people will strain already strained water supplies, and the world’s energy needs will go up by as much as 60 percent by 2030, according to the United Nations so environmental technology will play a crucial role in our maintaining a sustainable balance. Toxic Waste - What is Toxic Waste - Do We Clean it Up or Illegally Dump it Overseas?

Toxic waste, what is toxic waste? It is a waste material primarily derived from modern industrial age technologies and can cause serious injury, birth defects in humans and other animals, and even lead to death. It can spread quite rapidly and easily and can contaminate rivers and lakes, ground water supplies, ground, and the atmosphere. Sometimes it is also referred to as hazardous waste, and the two terms are often used interchangeably. This discarded material, if not disposed of properly can result in a long-term risk to the health of humans and wildlife as well as the environment.

What is Toxic Waste

Toxic waste are poisonous byproducts of manufacturing, farming, construction, farming, city sewage and septic systems, automotive garages and repair shops, laboratories, hospitals, along with other industrial processes. The hazardous waste may come in the form of liquids, solids, or sludge and contain dangerous chemicals, heavy metals, radiation, dangerous pathogens, among other toxins. Households even generate hazardous waste from such common items as old batteries, old computer equipment and other electronics, old paints and pesticides to name several.

There are, in fact, many items in your household that can, and are considered to be toxic waste. To find out which items in your house classify as hazardous waste you can consult the Household Products Database which lists most, if not all of the potential toxic substances in items commonly found in homes.
