Environmental Policy What is an Environmental Policy and What We Need To Focus On

Environmental Policy - Expect More - Do More

Environmental Policy - Expect More - Do More

Environmental policy is any type of action consciously taken, or disregarded to manage human activities with a view to prevent, reduce, or mitigate harmful effects on nature and natural resources, and ensuring that man-made changes to the environment do not have harmful effects on humans or wildlife and nature itself.

It is useful for us to consider that environmental policy comprises two major terms: environment and policy. Environment primarily refers to the ecological dimension (ecosystems), but can also take account of the social dimension, or quality of life, and as an economic dimension correlating to resource management. The term policy can be defined as a course of action or principle adopted or proposed by a government, party, business or individual. That leaves us with the combined definition that an environmental policy focuses on problems arising from human impact on the environment, which retro-acts onto human society by having a negative impact on human values such as good health or a healthy, robust environment.

Environmental issues which are typically addressed by standard environmental policies include (but are not limited to) air and water pollution, waste management, ecosystem management, biodiversity protection, and the protection of natural resources, wildlife and endangered species. More recently however, environmental policy has expanded into the communication of environmental issues. Neonicotinoid Pesticides Bee Populations Colony Collapse Disorder Linked in Two New Studies

Neonicotinoid pesticides Bee Populations Colony Collapse Disorder Linked

Neonicotinoid pesticides and bee populations crash are linked, however CropLife America, a front group for Monsanto, Dow, and other pesticide makers would have you believe otherwise. 2 recent studies have tied the crashing populations of Bees to the pesticide.

The pesticides in question are called Neonicotinoids, since they are derived from nicotine (used as a pesticide since the 1700′s). “Neonics” are systemic insecticides, or insecticides that are taken up by a plant’s tissues and circulate within the plant. This makes these pesticides a highly effective and relatively safe insect control method, since only insects that eat the plant will be affected. It also is sometimes the only way to kill insects inside a plant; an insect boring into a tree, for example, can’t be sprayed directly.

Neonicotinoid

Neonicotinoid is a widely used farm pesticide first introduced in the 1990s has caused significant changes to bee populations and colonies and removing it could be the key factor in restoring nature’s army of pollinators, the bee populations, according to two studies released Thursday. Clean Energy Fuel What Are They?

Clean energy fuel definitions can greatly vary depending on who you ask

Clean energy fuel definitions vary, depending on who you ask or where you look to for an answer. Some people think natural gas is a clean burning energy source and it is widely advertised as being “clean”, however it is not clean by any means. When we look at the power plant, the burning of natural gas produces nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide, but in lower quantities than burning coal or oil.

Methane (CH₄) is a primary component of natural gas and a highly potent greenhouse gas which can also be emitted into the air when the gas is not burned properly and completely. Similarly, methane can be emitted as the result of leaks and losses during transportation. Emissions of sulfur dioxide and mercury compounds from burning natural gas are negligible.

Methane remains in the atmosphere for approximately 9-15 years and is 25 times more effective in trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide (CO₂) over a 100-year period and 72 times more potent over a 20 year period. It is emitted from a variety of natural and human-influenced sources. The human-influenced sources include landfills, natural gas and petroleum systems, agricultural activities, coal mining, stationary and mobile combustion, waste-water treatment, and certain industrial processes. Child Labour and Sweatshops What Can Consumers Do?

Child Labour and Sweatshops Part 3

Child Labour and Sweatshops – Who Made YOUR Shirt?

Types of Garments Made in Sweatshops

There are some types of clothing that are more likely to be produced in a sweatshop by child labor than others.

-Shoes
Athletic shoes and sneakers are more commonly made in a sweatshop, but all kinds of shoes are made by cheap, underage child labor.

-Rugs
Do you have a rug that was “hand-made” in Pakistan or other country? Many of us love pretty “oriental” rugs, but in Pakistan alone, three-quarters of those who weave these carpets are young girls under the age of fourteen.

State of the Union Address 2012: Obama Emphasizes Clean Energy and Environmental Policies

In his State of the Union Address 2012, President Barack Obama emphasized clean energy and environmental policies as he clearly laid out his energy agenda in Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, promising “responsible development” of domestic oil and natural gas even as he pledged to invest in renewable energy. “We don’t have to choose between our environment and our economy,” he said.

Though he made no mention of Solyndra, the bankrupt solar company that benefited from a government loan program, or Keystone XL, the controversial oil pipeline he rejected to much celebration and criticism last week, the president showed political backbone in refusing to back down from his commitment to investing in developing renewables.

Obama vowed to incentivize manufacturers to make energy upgrades, as well as to green the carbon footprint of the nation’s military. He announced that the Department of Defense will make one of the largest commitments to clean energy in history, with the Navy purchasing enough capacity to power a quarter of a million homes per year. Climate Roadmap Proposal for UN Deal by 2015 Proposed by EU Climate Diplomat To Replace Kyoto Protocol Which Expires in 2012

A climate roadmap has been proposed by the European Union’s top climate diplomat on Nov 5, 2011 for the European Union which could lead to a comprehensive deal by the year 2015 has been well received. Currently, negotiations being conducted under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) have had little success ever since the Copenhagen Summit in December of 2009. The latest set of talks are scheduled from November 28 to December 9, 2011 in Durban, South Africa.

According to Connie Hedegaard, the European Climate commissioner, “I have had very positive signals about the EU proposal for a roadmap, as the idea would give countries more time, namely until 2015 to comply with international climate protection obligations and to introduce the corresponding monitoring.” Hedegaard stated that the new climate roadmap ought to be “binding” with it’s goal to encompass 80% to 85% of greenhouse gas emissions which are man-made, while the current Kyoto Protocol only encompasses roughly 33% in comparison.
