Greenhouse Gases Cause of Global Warming, Not Sun Activity New NASA Report Confirms

Solar Cycle

A prolonged solar minimum left the sun's surface nearly free of sunspots and accompanying bright areas called faculae between 2005 and 2010. Total solar irradiance declined slightly as a result, but the Earth continued to absorb more energy than it emit throughout the minimum. An animation of a full solar cycle is available here. Greenhouse gases are confirmed as the cause of global warming, not sun activity according to a recent NASA report. The recent, prolonged minimal in sun activity did not prevent the Earth from absorbing more solar energy than it let escape back into space, a recent NASA analysis of the Earth’s energy budget indicates. The study, Earth’s energy imbalance and implications, appeared in the Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics journal in December, 2011.

In a real brief summary, the study concluded:

Improving observations of ocean heat content show that Earth is absorbing more energy from the Sun than it is radiating to space as heat, even during the recent solar minimum. The inferred planetary energy imbalance, 0.58±0.15Wm−2 during the 6-yr period 2005–2010, confirms the dominant role of the human-made greenhouse effect in driving global climate change.

This imbalance is the primary driver for global warming, since more energy is coming in than leaving and, because it occurred during a period when the sun was emitting comparatively low levels of energy, the imbalance has implications for the cause of global warming. The results of the study confirm greenhouse gases produced by human activities are the most important driver of global climate change, according to the researchers. Texas Heat Wave & Drought Linked to Rapid Global Warming by NASA’s James Hansen

Texas Heat Wave & Drought Linked to Rapid Global Warming by NASA's James Hansen Images

The Texas heat wave and drought linked to rapid global climate change according to NASA’s James Hansen.

The Texas heat wave and Texas drought that occurred over three months last summer where the temperatures in Texas rose higher than at any time in recorded history, and the state is still in the midst of the most expensive drought in the states history. But can the 2011 Texas heat wave and Texas drought be linked to global warming?

Some of us do associate these extreme weather events like this list of worst storms – natural disasters 2011 to global warming. However it is an entirely different world for scientists, and it is even difficult to get accross the fact that climate change is going on or is man made, however those attempts to discredit the science have been reduced greatly by the Koch led study into whether or not global warming is real. Rio+20 Report Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing

The upcoming Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development for low-carbon prosperity and a sustainable planet sent out a blueprint with 56 recommendations yesterday in the Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing report just released.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon yesterday called for action on a new blueprint for creating a sustainable planet, a just society and a growing economy, stressing that the current path will not lead to a fair and resilient future for the world’s people. He stated: “We need to chart a new, more sustainable course for the future, one that strengthens equality and economic growth while protecting our planet. Sustainable development offers our best chance to change course.”

Speaking at the launch in Addis Ababa of the report prepared by his High-level Panel on Global Sustainability, Mr. Ban stressed that sustainable development is a top priority for his second term of office prior to the upcoming Rio+20 conference. NASA Ranks 2011 Ninth-Warmest Year Ever Recorded

According to NASA, 2011 ranked ninth warmest ever recorded and even added a temperature animation video! The global average surface temperature in 2011 was the ninth warmest since 1880, according to NASA scientists. The finding continues a trend in which nine of the 10 warmest years in the modern meteorological record have occurred since the year 2000.

NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York, which monitors global surface temperatures on an ongoing basis, released an updated analysis that shows temperatures around the globe in 2011 compared to the average global temperature from the mid-20th century. The comparison shows how Earth continues to experience warmer temperatures than several decades ago. The average temperature around the globe in 2011 was 0.92 degrees F (0.51 C) warmer than the mid-20th century baseline. USDA New School Lunch Standards Announced By First Lady Michelle Obama & Rachael Ray & Vilsack

The USDA new school lunch standards were announced yesterday by First Lady Michelle Obama, celebrity chef Rachael Ray, and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack at the Parklawn elementary school in Alexandra, VA, thus making the days of square pizzas and beef burritos in school cafeterias numbered.

First lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced yesterday that big changes are coming to school lunches, which will be the first changes in more than 15 years to the program. According to the new School Meal Programs Provisions and Other Standards, most school meals will have less sodium, more whole grains along with more fruits and vegetables options as side dishes. The popular pizzas will still be on school lunch lines due to lobbyists from the potato growers and food companies, but they will be made with healthier ingredients. State of the Union Address 2012: Obama Emphasizes Clean Energy and Environmental Policies

In his State of the Union Address 2012, President Barack Obama emphasized clean energy and environmental policies as he clearly laid out his energy agenda in Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, promising “responsible development” of domestic oil and natural gas even as he pledged to invest in renewable energy. “We don’t have to choose between our environment and our economy,” he said.

Though he made no mention of Solyndra, the bankrupt solar company that benefited from a government loan program, or Keystone XL, the controversial oil pipeline he rejected to much celebration and criticism last week, the president showed political backbone in refusing to back down from his commitment to investing in developing renewables.

Obama vowed to incentivize manufacturers to make energy upgrades, as well as to green the carbon footprint of the nation’s military. He announced that the Department of Defense will make one of the largest commitments to clean energy in history, with the Navy purchasing enough capacity to power a quarter of a million homes per year.
