African's Stepping Up To Address Climate Change With Renewable Energy With Enormous Potential For the Continent
The key to ramping up renewable energy resources is to develop a regulatory framework to convince institutional investors it’s safe to put their money into these cutting-edge technologies, Adnan Amin told nearly 30 African energy and foreign affairs ministers at the start of a two-day meeting.
“If Africa continues to grow at pace it is growing and intensifies that growth and uses only carbon-emitting forms of energy, it will exponentially change the picture on climate change and make it much worse,” said Amin, a Kenyan who is director general of the International Renewable Energy Agency.
“We need right now to start making the kinds of investment that will lead Africa on a very different path,” he said.

1. Wind Energy
Wind is a renewable energy source. Even though it comes and goes, it can’t be used up. This makes it an attractive choice for homeowners, and is considered a viable means by which entire communities can be supplied with electricity. The wind’s energy is harnessed by rotating blades of various shapes and sizes (wind turbines). Continue Reading Alternative Energy 101 Wind, Solar and Geothermal Alternative Energy Sources Here

What are Wind Turbines
Modern wind turbines are essentially much like a wind mill, much like the one’s you’d see on farms or in Holland. However, instead of being attached to a mill to grind grain into flour, the turbine is attached to an electrical generator. The result is energy. How much energy? Well it depends on the size of the blades and the wind speed.
Wind turbines can be used on a large scale to produce energy for a city. The turbines generally have two or three blades or rotors. On sunny, windy days they can produce several megawatts. The energy can also be stored for non windy days. On a smaller scale, for home use, a wind turbine can produce about 100 kilowatts. They work well to compliment a solar electric power system.
