Artificial Christmas Trees and Your Families Health There are some health issues which many might not be aware of with these!

Many people get artificial Christmas trees because they have allergies, or otherwise find that real trees are not acceptable in their households, but artificial trees can pose some health risks that go beyond just allergies that many of us may not be aware of. When it comes to fake trees and your health, think about some of the following issues before you purchase one or bring it out from storage.

Chemical Warnings

Some fake trees are required to have a label warning about their chemical content. The label warns about the tree’s chemical content, noting lead specifically and its tendency to cause birth defects. It concludes with instructions to wash your hands after handling. Continue Reading Artificial Christmas Trees and Your Families Health Here

USDA New School Lunch Standards Announced By First Lady Michelle Obama & Rachael Ray & Vilsack

The USDA new school lunch standards were announced yesterday by First Lady Michelle Obama, celebrity chef Rachael Ray, and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack at the Parklawn elementary school in Alexandra, VA, thus making the days of square pizzas and beef burritos in school cafeterias numbered.

First lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced yesterday that big changes are coming to school lunches, which will be the first changes in more than 15 years to the program. According to the new School Meal Programs Provisions and Other Standards, most school meals will have less sodium, more whole grains along with more fruits and vegetables options as side dishes. The popular pizzas will still be on school lunch lines due to lobbyists from the potato growers and food companies, but they will be made with healthier ingredients. Back to Nature How to Encourage Today’s Housebound Children to Explore the Great Outdoors

The way children should be enjoying their childhood!

Years ago, summertime meant the sound of children playing in neighborhood yards. These days, however, yards remain silent as kids are camped out in front of computers, televisions, and video games. To help the health of our children and get them in touch with nature, we need to get them back outside. Here are some ways to encourage housebound children to enjoy the outdoors.

1. Get outside yourself – If your children see you sitting in front of the TV all evening, they will follow suit and won’t be motivated to get outside. Getting outdoors is healthy for adults, too, so do your whole family a favor and invite them outside for a group game of Frisbee, horseshoes, or a nature walk. The first step to getting your kids outdoors is to lead them there. Continue Reading Back to Nature How to Encourage Today’s Housebound Children to Explore the Great Outdoors Here

Anorexia Symptoms And Teens How to Help An Anorexic Teen as a Parent

Many teens, both male and female, struggle with their body image and Anorexia, so they may feel ugly, fat or awkward, and can lead to them becoming an anorexic. This struggle can lead to eating disorders. One of the more notable eating disorders is Anorexia which is an eating disorder whereby a teen literally starves themselves to death. It’s estimated that in the US two out of every hundred teens struggles with this or bulimia. The good news is that there is a lot a parent can do to help.

Childhood Obesity: Childhood Obesity Facts Include Increased Heart Conditions

Childhood Obesity Facts: Heart Disease may soon follow!

Unfortunately, childhood obesity is a significant problem, and it is not only a condition that affects the childhood of the obese individual. Being obese as a child increases your risk for heart conditions in adulthood. In fact, obesity in children has been called a warning sign of heart disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), 16 percent of children between the ages of 2 and 19 meet the criteria for obesity. And while new cases of obese children are not necessarily growing, the number of children with diabetes is growing. This may well be a backlash of the childhood obesity epidemic.

In one study, artery wall thickness in obese children and teens was found to be as thick as the artery walls of a 45-year-old adult. This means that childhood obesity could have a sort of acceleration effect on heart disease. While the study was not conclusive and the number of participants was small, it does raise a certain red flag of concern.
