Neonicotinoid Pesticides Bee Populations Colony Collapse Disorder Linked in Two New Studies

Neonicotinoid pesticides Bee Populations Colony Collapse Disorder Linked

Neonicotinoid pesticides and bee populations crash are linked, however CropLife America, a front group for Monsanto, Dow, and other pesticide makers would have you believe otherwise. 2 recent studies have tied the crashing populations of Bees to the pesticide.

The pesticides in question are called Neonicotinoids, since they are derived from nicotine (used as a pesticide since the 1700′s). “Neonics” are systemic insecticides, or insecticides that are taken up by a plant’s tissues and circulate within the plant. This makes these pesticides a highly effective and relatively safe insect control method, since only insects that eat the plant will be affected. It also is sometimes the only way to kill insects inside a plant; an insect boring into a tree, for example, can’t be sprayed directly.

Neonicotinoid

Neonicotinoid is a widely used farm pesticide first introduced in the 1990s has caused significant changes to bee populations and colonies and removing it could be the key factor in restoring nature’s army of pollinators, the bee populations, according to two studies released Thursday. When is Arbor Day Around the World - When is yours?

When is Arbor Day around the world is what many people are beginning to ask as the end of Winter is approaching rapidly. Spring is getting closer and closer and with that goes planting, and it is the optimal time to begin planting preparations for your yards, gardens, and community projects.

Tree Planting for celebration

In the United States, National Arbor Day is officially the last Friday in April, but due to differences in optimal tree planting times, some states prefer to have their own different dates for Arbor Day. This year, as with other years, organizations are giving away free trees to celebrate.

Celebrate Arbor Day 2012! Free Tree Information

Receive 10 free flowering trees by joining the Arbor Day Foundation

To find other free tree giveaways, just bing or google “free trees arbor day 2012″ or the current year for better results. We included the top three we could find, however there are many, many more listings, many of which are also duplicates but we couldn’t list them all as there were nearly 200 million results. Here is the list for the US as the table below lists each state with its individual specific dates for this holiday. Continue Reading When is Arbor Day Around the World? Cleveland Volcano in Alaska Aleutian Islands On Verge of Another Eruption?

Cleveland Volcano in Alaska Aleutian Islands On Verge of Another Eruption? (This photo of the Volcano was captured by an Expedition 13 Flight Engineer Jeff Williams from International Space Station (ISS) on May 23, 2006. Shortly after this photo was obtained, he immediately contacted the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) to inform what was currently happening.)

The Cleveland Volcano in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands may be on the verge of another eruption, as new satellite imagery of the 5,676-foot peak, located about 940 miles southwest of Anchorage in Alaska’s remote Aleutian islands, shows a new, bulging lava dome forming in the volcano’s summit crater, suggesting a buildup of gas pressure.

Even though the volcano is in an uninhabited area, an eruption could still cause a big mess. According to CNN, some 90 percent of air freight from Asia to Europe and North America passes over Alaska, along with hundreds of commercial flights.

Officials say that intermittent and sudden explosions could happen at any time, generating ash clouds up to 20,000 feet above sea level. Continue Reading Cleveland Volcano in Alaska Aleutian Islands On Verge of Another Eruption? Here

Snowy Owls Rare Migration Further South Remains Mystery

Snowy Owls Rare Migration Further South Remains Mystery To Experts

Snowy Owls are migrating en-mass further south this season, with some sightings as far south as Oklahoma! There have been sightings of thousands of the snow-white birds, which stand 2 feet tall with 5-foot wingspans, have been spotted from coast to coast, feeding in farmlands of Idaho, roosting on rooftops in Montana, sailing over golf courses in Missouri and over the shorelines in Massachusetts.

Bird enthusiasts this year report elevated levels of these iconic birds from the Arctic flying into the lower 48 states this winter in a mass southern migration that leading owl researcher Denver Holt, head of the Owl Research Institute in Montana called “unbelievable. What we’re seeing now it’s unbelievable,” he said.

A small of the iconic owls fly south from their Arctic breeding grounds each winter but rarely do such vast quantities venture so far away even amid large-scale, periodic southern migrations known as irruptions. Continue Reading Snowy Owls Rare Migration Further South Remains Mystery Here

Why Does it Rain? Understanding The Water Cycle Can Explain Why Does It Rain

Why Does it Rain? Understanding The Water Cycle Can Explain Why Photo Credit NOAA

Why does it rain is basically an understanding of the water cycle. The cycle is most often shown as a relatively simple circular cycle where water evaporates from the ocean, is then transported over land by clouds, and then returns to the ground in the form of rain or snow. It then completes the cycle by returning back to the oceans through the rivers and streams.

Rain can be a marvelous thing, and it can also be a disastrous problem. We get too little rain and we will wind up being in a drought, with little to no water available for the crops, plants and trees as well as humans and animals. On the other hand, we can get too much rain, which will equate to flooding, and can also wreak havoc on crops, other plant life and trees. It can also be a big problem for local populations, ruining homes and businesses, and disrupting local economies, and displacing people as well as local wildlife populations. Why Does it Snow?

Why does it snow you ask, we will tell.

Why does it snow is a question that many people ask when winter begins. The air temperature, amount of moisture in the air and the patterns of the wind and jet stream are the primary factors for this winter weather event.

Why Does it Snow

Primarily, it needs to be cold out for it to snow, lower than 32°F though all the different layers of the atmosphere. As the atmosphere is layered, if they are all not below the freezing point, we could get just plain rain, hail or sleet.

Let’s first start at the beginning with precipitation which can come in several forms. For us to get rain, water vapor in the atmosphere needs what is commonly referred to in the scientific community as a “condensation nucleus”, which can be tiny particles of either dust or pollen which are swept up high into the atmosphere. When the condensing droplets that form the cloud get large and heavy enough to overcome the upward pressure of what is called convection, they start to fall. If the temperature all the way to the ground is above freezing, then we get rain! When ice crystals form high up in the cloud, and it’s below the freezing point of water all the way down, then we will get snow. But when there are alternating layers of air above and below freezing, you get other types of precipitation.
