USDA Announces Critical Upgrades to Nutritional Standards for School Meals
Proposed Changes Will Improve the Health and Wellbeing of Children Nationwide and Help Address Childhood Obesity Crisis
WASHINGTON, D.C. Jan. 13, 2010 —The USDA announced critical upgrades to nutritional standards for school meals, as we at Green Planet Ethics learned Thursday, July 13th, 2011, that the U.S. Department of Agriculture published a proposed rule to update the nutrition standards for meals served through the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs as part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, signed into law by President Barack Obama on December 13, 2010. The new proposed meal requirements will raise standards for the first time in fifteen years and will make critical changes to school meals and help improve the health and nutrition of nearly 32 million kids that participate in school meal programs every school day, an important component of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative to solve the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation.
“The United States is facing an obesity epidemic and the crisis of poor diets threatens the future of our children – and our nation,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “With many children consuming as many as half their daily calories at school, strengthening nutritional standards is an important step in the Obama administration’s effort to combat childhood obesity and improve the health and wellbeing of all our kids.” Continue Reading USDA Announces Critical Upgrades to Nutritional Standards for School Meals Here
Educational Wooden Toys for Healthy Minds
* Toys based on movies limit children to using pre-fabricated characters and plots, thus stunting imagination and creativity growth.
* Electronic toys may claim educational value, but that education may be limited to alphabet letters that light up or speakers that announce the name of an animal when a certain button is pushed.
* There is growing concern over the toxicity of the plastics used to make toys. PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, is environmentally toxic to produce and contains chemicals (adipates and phthalates) that can leach into foods and, of course, into your child or baby’s mouth, especially when they like to play with them in their mouth! Alternative Punishments for Children
1. Meet the Need
This is probably the number one thing you can do to stop or prevent unwanted behavior. It is vital that the underlying cause of a behavior be addressed. Often, meeting the need stops the behavior and no correction is even needed.
For instance, if your child tends to have meltdowns half an hour before lunch, don’t send her to her room or to a chair for punishment. Think a moment – right before lunch probably means her blood sugar is low, or she’s just hungry. Give her a light snack that won’t spoil lunch instead. And next time, plan a mid-morning snack and watch the pre-lunchtime meltdowns melt away. Continue Reading Alternative Punishments for Children Here

Unschooling – A New Approach to Teaching and Learning
Essentially, unschooling is an unconventional approach to educating kids that does not follow the institutional school model. Unschoolers do not use a traditional curriculum like homeschoolers do. The core belief of this philosophy is that the child has a natural curiosity and drive to learn – they are always learning and the unschooler’s job is to encourage them.
To understand better what this philosophy entails, here are some things that unschooling is, and some things it is not.
What Unschooling Is Not
* Neglectful – The one who unschools his kids is in frequent interaction with them. He is well aware of laws and requirements that his children will have to answer to, and unschools accordingly. Continue Reading Unschooling – A New Approach to Teaching and Learning Here
