Chile Miners Rescue Finally! Alex Ibanez/AP

The Chile Miners Rescue effort is the deepest ever made by all current records of mining disasters, and on top of that the miners were underground longer than anyone whom has ever made it out alive. It was also one of the most advanced rescues of its kind, and the current thought is that it can help bother other countries and firms increase their safety standards for the future. An in depth analysis is first needed though of what went wrong at the San Jose Mine located near Copiapo, Chile.

On Tuesday, however amidst cheers and tears of joy, at 12:12 AM Chilean Time, the first of the Chile miners to be rescued, Florencio Avalos reached the surface. Continue Reading Chile Miners Rescue Here

Cholera Outbreak Hits Quake Ravaged Haiti

A cholera outbreak has Haiti’s government and aid workers and organizations fighting today to contain the cholera epidemic. It has killed at least 140 people and has affected more than 1500, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Cholera is a virulent diarrheal disease, which typically comes from contaminated water or food containing the cholera bacteria and isn’t not usually contagious. Outbreaks can be multiplied exponentially for those living in unsanitary and crowded conditions, almost identical to those that Haitian’s now are experiencing. This is the first cholera epidemic in over a century for the Caribbean island nation, whom seems to get more than their fair share of disasters, and it is also the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. One aid worker from the main hospital in Saint-Marc describes it as a “horror scene.”

Celebrate this keys holiday today!

International caps lock day is today, although we choose not to do it, as many people find it most annoying. So no more shouting from us, okay! So if you use twitter of Facebook, you may seen an increase in caps lock usage today, and now you know the reason why, as today is officially their holiday. This holiday, if you want to call it that, was created in 2000 by a Derek Arnold who had the idea that everyone should only type in caps lock. Why do this, as most people find it annoying you may ask? To find the answer, we go directly to the source, Mr. Arnold himself, and I quote,

“International Caps Lock Day is in fact a testament to the small mindedness of certain Western individuals: the majority of the world’s population writes in scripts which have no concept of letter casing. Therefore it is advised to laugh at anyone who invokes this day as an excuse to dismiss local typographical conventions: they are simply making an ass out of themselves.”

Rare Earth Elements Vital to Green Technology Becoming Harder to Get From China - Theres Green Gold in them that hills!

Rare earth elements or minerals (REEs), aren’t actually rare, as they are as abundant as nickel or tin, and come by the obscure names such as dysprosium, gadolinium and praseodymium. While these names are your average household name, or item, these elements are crucial in the high tech labs and assembly plants, as they are utilized in the manufacturing of electronics, and yes, even green technologies. These so called rare elements are mined from the Earth’s crust and provide a distinct set of chemical elements which are extremely important in the manufacturing of many high and low tech products. They are used for products such as our iPhones, hybrid cars, Wind Turbines, Fiber Optics, aluminum baseball bats, smart munitions, and computer parts, to name a few. They are also essential in the next generation of new green energy technologies.

The major concern with these minerals is that they are mainly produced in China, as it is currently producing 97% of the worlds supply of them. There is great concern now as China has indicated it will reduce export quotas by 30% in 2011, which immediately follows a 72 percent reduction for the second half of 2010.
