Tornado Watch Issued For Boston 6/1/2011

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Boston as hazardous weather forms in the northeast United States.

From the National Weather Service:

THE MAIN THREATS FROM THESE POSSIBLE SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE FROM LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS. ISOLATED TORNADOES ARE ALSO POSSIBLE. A TORNADO WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT
THROUGH 8 PM EDT.

In total, seven Massachusetts counties are under a tornado watch, including Essex, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk and Worcester.

The tornado watch, which is in effect until 8 p.m. tonight, covers eight states, from Maine to New Jersey, and includes New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Providence and Hartford.

The Associated Press reports that these areas could experience winds up to 70 mph as well as golf ball-sized hail.

Record Shattering March Heat Wave Surprises Scientists

Record shattering March heat wave sent people to the beaches in droves

The record shattering March heat wave has come as a surprise even to a majority of scientists. In fact, it’s been so warm in the United States alone this year, especially in March, that national records weren’t just shattered, they were literally baked!

Temperatures in the U.S. for the lower 48 states averaged 8.6 degrees above normal for March alone and an astonishing 6 degrees higher than average for the entire first three months of the year 2012, according to calculations made by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). That by far exceeds, or shatters in our opinion the existing records.

Some meteorologists who have warned about the effects of global warming have become alarmed at the magnitude of how unusual the year has been in the United States. One climate scientist said the record march heat wave is like the weather equivalent of a baseball player on steroids, with old records being obliterated, like the home run records during the big steroid era in major league baseball. Texas Heat Wave & Drought Linked to Rapid Global Warming by NASA’s James Hansen

Texas Heat Wave & Drought Linked to Rapid Global Warming by NASA's James Hansen Images

The Texas heat wave and drought linked to rapid global climate change according to NASA’s James Hansen.

The Texas heat wave and Texas drought that occurred over three months last summer where the temperatures in Texas rose higher than at any time in recorded history, and the state is still in the midst of the most expensive drought in the states history. But can the 2011 Texas heat wave and Texas drought be linked to global warming?

Some of us do associate these extreme weather events like this list of worst storms – natural disasters 2011 to global warming. However it is an entirely different world for scientists, and it is even difficult to get accross the fact that climate change is going on or is man made, however those attempts to discredit the science have been reduced greatly by the Koch led study into whether or not global warming is real. NASA Ranks 2011 Ninth-Warmest Year Ever Recorded

According to NASA, 2011 ranked ninth warmest ever recorded and even added a temperature animation video! The global average surface temperature in 2011 was the ninth warmest since 1880, according to NASA scientists. The finding continues a trend in which nine of the 10 warmest years in the modern meteorological record have occurred since the year 2000.

NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York, which monitors global surface temperatures on an ongoing basis, released an updated analysis that shows temperatures around the globe in 2011 compared to the average global temperature from the mid-20th century. The comparison shows how Earth continues to experience warmer temperatures than several decades ago. The average temperature around the globe in 2011 was 0.92 degrees F (0.51 C) warmer than the mid-20th century baseline. The largest solar storm is hitting us now as a result of Sunday nights solar flare, the largest since 2005. The solar flare occurred at about 11 p.m. EST Sunday Jan 22, 2012 and will hit Earth with three different effects at three different times. The biggest issue is radiation, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado.

The sun is bombarding Earth with radiation from the biggest sun event in more than six years with more to come from the fast-moving eruption. The radiation, which comes in the form of protons, erupted out of the sun and are traveling at 93 million miles per hour.

The radiation is mostly a concern for satellite disruptions and astronauts in space. It can cause communication problems for polar-traveling airplanes, said space weather center physicist Doug Biesecker.

Radiation from Sunday’s solar flare arrived at Earth an hour later and will likely continue through Wednesday. Levels are considered strong but other storms have been more severe. There are two higher levels of radiation on NOAA’s storm scale — severe and extreme — Biesecker said. Still, this storm is the strongest for radiation since May 2005.
