I think they look better in any lamp. The light is a cleaner, whiter light altogether. Plus they save you so much more money in a years’ time.
i actually have one in my living room lamp and it isn’t visible with the shade on it..plus i got one that is like a soft light color so it doesn’t put off the florescent color and it still makes the room feel comfortable and not look like a hospital

It depends,..
Most lamps are SHADED, so the appearance of the bulb is not an issue. You may need a broader HARP since some compact fluorescents are bulky.
If you’re talking about a READING lamp, then go ahead and splurge with a 50W halogen for the sake of your eyes and sanity!

We use energy saving lights everywhere in our house. We have can lights in the basement and they work really well in those. Our lamps all have shades so you can’t see the bulb, so if just don’t want to see it, that’s an option. We even use them in our hanging lights above the dining room table. For the most part, you never notice the bulbs no matter where you use them and they produce a cleaner, brighter light. They are an excellent choice all over – looks and financially!
I have a compact flourescent bulb in a lot of my lamps around my apartment, and I notice that certain ones look better than others, mainly because of the lamp shade for those specific lamps.
For instance, I have a floor lamp in my bedroom with a slightly off-white paper shade, you turn the lamp on and it gives off a nice soft white cast (like a regular incandescent bulb), compared to another floor lamp on the other end of the room, which has a transluscent glass shade; that one gives off a stronger white tone to it.
