GOP Led House Passes Cut Version Of Obama’s Energy Bill By $6 Billion
The bill included an amendment that allows companies to continue to make and sell old-school 100 watt light bulbs after January 1, 2012, when they were originally scheduled to be phased out. Previously, Republicans have tried to overturn a 2007 law requiring light bulbs to be more energy efficient starting in 2012, but all previous attempts have failed. The new House bill also blocks the Obama Administration from closing the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste project in Nevada. The government has already spent $15 billion on the project, but it still not open for business, which is storing spent nuclear fuel from power plants. Asian Oil Takeover? PetroChina Buys Out MacKay River Oil Sands Project In Canada
Calgary-based Athabasca Oil Sands Corp said it exercised an option to sell its 40 percent interest in the MacKay River project in northern Alberta to PetroChina so it could free up money to concentrate on some of its other oil sands and light crude projects.
After the project won regulatory approvals last week, the partners had 30 days to decide to exercise put and call options on Athabasca’s stake. DOE Announces .5 Billion For 3 Solar Projects
LOS ANGELES — The Department of Energy has announced nearly $ 4.5 billion in conditional commitments for loan guarantees for three California solar projects, the agency said.The announcement includes $680 million for the Antelope Valley Solar Ranch in Los Angeles County, $1.88 billion for the Desert Sunlight project in Riverside County and $1.93 billion in loans for the Topaz Solar project in San Luis Obispo County.
The agency would not disclose the specific conditions of the loan guarantees and partial loan guarantees, which vary by project but can include such requirements as securing necessary permits.
The three projects combined are expected to create 1,400 jobs and generate approximately 1,330 megawatts of installed solar power, according to the department.
