USDA New School Lunch Standards Announced By First Lady Michelle Obama & Rachael Ray & Vilsack

The USDA new school lunch standards were announced yesterday by First Lady Michelle Obama, celebrity chef Rachael Ray, and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack at the Parklawn elementary school in Alexandra, VA, thus making the days of square pizzas and beef burritos in school cafeterias numbered.

First lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced yesterday that big changes are coming to school lunches, which will be the first changes in more than 15 years to the program. According to the new School Meal Programs Provisions and Other Standards, most school meals will have less sodium, more whole grains along with more fruits and vegetables options as side dishes. The popular pizzas will still be on school lunch lines due to lobbyists from the potato growers and food companies, but they will be made with healthier ingredients. Back to Nature How to Encourage Today’s Housebound Children to Explore the Great Outdoors

The way children should be enjoying their childhood!

Years ago, summertime meant the sound of children playing in neighborhood yards. These days, however, yards remain silent as kids are camped out in front of computers, televisions, and video games. To help the health of our children and get them in touch with nature, we need to get them back outside. Here are some ways to encourage housebound children to enjoy the outdoors.

1. Get outside yourself – If your children see you sitting in front of the TV all evening, they will follow suit and won’t be motivated to get outside. Getting outdoors is healthy for adults, too, so do your whole family a favor and invite them outside for a group game of Frisbee, horseshoes, or a nature walk. The first step to getting your kids outdoors is to lead them there. Continue Reading Back to Nature How to Encourage Today’s Housebound Children to Explore the Great Outdoors Here

Family together in bed sick with a cold.

Cold and flu symptoms are sometimes similar so it is hard to distinguish which one you have. While they are both respiratory illnesses, they are caused by different viruses. It is also difficult to tell which one you based on the symptoms due to the similarities in the symptoms of both. To tell the difference between them, we have compiled a list that should help you to determine which one you have. For general reference, influenza (flu) is more serious than a common cold, and the symptoms more intense, however they tend to not last as long.

Those most likely to first get it are school age children which are typically the first age group to come down with a case of influenza. They get the virus at school and bring it to their other activities and their homes, where they are in contact with other children and adults, and their family members. The typical flu season is from the months of October to March. Continue Reading Cold and Flu Symptoms Which Do You Have? Here

Child Labour Pros And Cons - Yes, there are some cons!

As we all know, child labour is a much thought about topic, and we consider both the pros and cons of this topic, and yes, believe it or not there are cons, albeit not too many. Many of us in the western developed world consider child labor a taboo, and think of it as a problem and have strict child labor laws in effect. Some nations also try to reduce this type of labour in other nations with laws and sanctions, and also try to use funding and education to help to curb the use of this questionable form of labour. It is also considered by many international organizations to be exploitative. It has also been used throughout most of the past, but with the adaptation of universal schooling, it has become a disreputable practice and by most standards, not even considered any more, at least in developed nations.
