Happy Earth Day Everybody!

Why Earth day do you ask? Many have asked the question why Earth Day since its inception on April 22nd, 1970 I imagine. Lets begin with a brief history on this historic event. This year, 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of the original day which was celebrated on April 22nd, 1970. Those were troubled times, with the Vietnam War, Anti-War Protests, and then April 22nd. Filling barrel with water from hose, but is it safe?

Monday, March 22, 2010 which is today by the way, is the annual World Water Day Celebration, which for 2010 has chosen the theme ‘Clean Water for a Healthy World. This is due to the fact that every year, approximately 1,500 cubic kilometers of waste water is produced worldwide. These waste waters can be productively reused for both energy and irrigation, however it more often than not isn’t recycled into reusable water. Most developing nations only recycle or treat 20 percent of all the waste that is being discharged because of the lack of both resources and regulations. Both population and industrial expansion have increased the amounts of pollution and at the same time increased the demand for safer water. Because of these issues looming Continue Reading Today Is World Water Day 2010 – Clean Water for a Healthy World Here

Clean Energy Fuel What Are They?

Clean energy fuel definitions can greatly vary depending on who you ask

Clean energy fuel definitions vary, depending on who you ask or where you look to for an answer. Some people think natural gas is a clean burning energy source and it is widely advertised as being “clean”, however it is not clean by any means. When we look at the power plant, the burning of natural gas produces nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide, but in lower quantities than burning coal or oil.

Methane (CH₄) is a primary component of natural gas and a highly potent greenhouse gas which can also be emitted into the air when the gas is not burned properly and completely. Similarly, methane can be emitted as the result of leaks and losses during transportation. Emissions of sulfur dioxide and mercury compounds from burning natural gas are negligible.

Methane remains in the atmosphere for approximately 9-15 years and is 25 times more effective in trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide (CO₂) over a 100-year period and 72 times more potent over a 20 year period. It is emitted from a variety of natural and human-influenced sources. The human-influenced sources include landfills, natural gas and petroleum systems, agricultural activities, coal mining, stationary and mobile combustion, waste-water treatment, and certain industrial processes. Mid-Atlantic Wind Farms Move Forward With Obama Plan Using National Ocean Policy Smart-From-The-Start

Gigantic Mid-Atlantic offshore wind farms move forward with an Obama Administration’s plan using smart-from-the-start from the National Ocean Policy. These new smart development projects could create upwards of tens of thousands of jobs and clean, domestic energy reducing dependence on foreign imports, and more importantly, fossil fuels.

The Obama administration on Thursday, 2/2/2012 moved forward with plans to develop the enormous Mid-Atlantic offshore wind farms for developing wind energy resources, using the new approach that has the potential to expedite the process while incorporating strong environmental protections, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The administration released plans for developing waters off New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. Offshore wind power could create thousands of jobs and generate power for millions of homes in the region. State of the Union Address 2012: Obama Emphasizes Clean Energy and Environmental Policies

In his State of the Union Address 2012, President Barack Obama emphasized clean energy and environmental policies as he clearly laid out his energy agenda in Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, promising “responsible development” of domestic oil and natural gas even as he pledged to invest in renewable energy. “We don’t have to choose between our environment and our economy,” he said.

Though he made no mention of Solyndra, the bankrupt solar company that benefited from a government loan program, or Keystone XL, the controversial oil pipeline he rejected to much celebration and criticism last week, the president showed political backbone in refusing to back down from his commitment to investing in developing renewables.

Obama vowed to incentivize manufacturers to make energy upgrades, as well as to green the carbon footprint of the nation’s military. He announced that the Department of Defense will make one of the largest commitments to clean energy in history, with the Navy purchasing enough capacity to power a quarter of a million homes per year. Clean Energy – Future Of Clean Energy in US from Secretary of Energy Chu

Clean energy sounds like a great idea for most people, and Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, in his speech to the Washington Post Live Smart Energy Conference on Nov. 3, 2011 mentioned our choices in America are to either surrender of take advantage of the huge economic opportunities that are becoming available in the smart energy race. Why can’t we afford to offer the same amount of incentives and subsidies that we do to fossil fuels, or do they have that much of a grip on our government at this point? Here is the speech from Secretary Chu.

Future Of Clean Energy in US from Secretary of Energy Chu

On a windy day at Kitty Hawk on December 17, 1903, the Wright Brothers launched the world’s first powered airplane to achieve human flight – and with it, a whole new industry. For the next several years, they led the world. What is less appreciated is that the United States lost the technology lead in airplanes by the beginning of World War I. Although the U.S. military was the first and major customer of the Wright Brothers and their competitor, Glenn Curtiss, between 1908 and 1913, the United States ranked 14th in government investment in aviation. The low level of government showed: When we entered the war in 1917, we were so far behind that our allies convinced us to produce European designed aircraft.
