Richard Kauffman: Clean Energy Markets: We’ve Got the Innovation and Deployment Cart and Horse Backwards

Richard Kauffman: Clean Energy Markets: We’ve Got the Innovation and Deployment Cart and Horse Backwards

Energy.gov will be hosting a live video chat with Richard Kauffman this Thursday at 2:00 PM ET.

China has become the world’s largest producer of solar modules. But did you know that these Chinese manufacturers are using technology breakthroughs developed in the United States?

And it’s not just China using our technology innovations. Many European countries — who produce substantially more of their electricity from renewable energy than the United States — depend on our nation’s thriving renewable energy innovation engine, with substantial intellectual property in renewable energy and energy-efficient technology.

For example, Germany produces nearly 20 percent of its electricity from wind, solar and biomass — more than twice the percentage of the U.S. So there’s ample demand for renewables to ensure deployment of new renewable technologies for power production.

Given that the United States is the birthplace to some of the world’s greatest clean energy technology, what’s the disconnect in our ability to deploy it?

Clean Water: Water Shortage Crisis Worsens As Climate Change Advances

Many of us take clean water for granted, especially in developed nations. We go to the kitchen or bathroom and turn on the faucet, and viola, we have instant access to clean water! Unfortunately, for roughly some 1 billion people, that isn’t the case. In fact, according to The Water Project, there is a global water shortage, or water crisis if you will. Those 1 billion people don’t have any access to clean drinking water, and 1 in every eight people on this planet has to drink water that is unsafe and likely to make them ill. Unsafe drinking water and a lack of any basic sanitation equipment or services causes 80% of all disease and is responsible for killing more people than all forms of violence combined, including wars.

They categorize water scarcity into two different categories, the first being economic scarcity. Economic water scarcity is when the general population doesn’t have the financial means to utilize an adequate source of it. This typically arises from political and ethnic conflicts. This is also should be of concern to us, because it is the most needed for human life, and should not be held back for political or racial issues. That is just a lack of compassion and morals. Much of Africa experiences economic scarcity for clean water. Continue Reading Clean Water: Water Shortage Crisis Worsens As Climate Change Advances Here

Clean Coal Fact or Fiction

Clean Coal Fact or Fiction,clean coal,co2 emissions,coal,co2,clean,ccs,emissions,storage,years,billion,current,future

Now that is a real problem! Does anyone else see a problem with this?

Our current coal power plants produce approximately 1/3 of our carbon emissions, and 40% worldwide, with modest increases predicted worldwide, except Asia, mainly China, which is projected to more than double by 2030. And I won’t even touch on all the other harmful toxins released not only by burning coal, but by mining it, and the costs of those mines on the local communities’ health and well-being. Many new hopes do lie in the promising technology of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), which eliminates the carbon emissions from any carbon based fuel supply from atmospheric release, only to move those CO2 emissions to another location. Where those other storage places for CO2 is will create more issues though, and pose more threats on the horizon. Continue Reading Clean Coal Fact or Fiction Here

WWD 2011

Today, March 22, 2011 is World Water Day 2011 (WWD), and the theme for this years celebration is “Water for Cities”. Out of all things in nature that we need, water is one of the most important and is a basic requirement for the life of each and every living thing on the planet, from animals to plants. Today, with populations rising, water supplies are being dwindled with increased demand, and water management is becoming increasingly difficult. Add to that problem the pollution that man has either directly, or indirectly added to those water supplies, which makes getting clean water even more difficult.
