United Nations Climate Chief CO2 Benchmark of 2C Too High 4C Possible By 2060

United Nations climate chief Christiana Figueres is calling for world leaders to aim for an even lower threshold for rising global average temperatures, even as new figures suggest that the prospects for preventing temperatures from rising beyond a key benchmark of 2C grew even dimmer in 2010.

According to new estimates that were released this week by the International Energy Agency, global emissions of energy-related carbon dioxide in 2010 were the highest ever measured at 30.6 gigatonnes, which equates to a 5 percent jump over the previous record year of 2008. The 2010 increase follows a decline in 2009 of global emissions, which were impacted by the economic downturn. Clean Coal Fact or Fiction

Clean Coal Fact or Fiction,clean coal,co2 emissions,coal,co2,clean,ccs,emissions,storage,years,billion,current,future

Now that is a real problem! Does anyone else see a problem with this?

Our current coal power plants produce approximately 1/3 of our carbon emissions, and 40% worldwide, with modest increases predicted worldwide, except Asia, mainly China, which is projected to more than double by 2030. And I won’t even touch on all the other harmful toxins released not only by burning coal, but by mining it, and the costs of those mines on the local communities’ health and well-being. Many new hopes do lie in the promising technology of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), which eliminates the carbon emissions from any carbon based fuel supply from atmospheric release, only to move those CO2 emissions to another location. Where those other storage places for CO2 is will create more issues though, and pose more threats on the horizon. Continue Reading Clean Coal Fact or Fiction Here

Ethanol Ethics

ethanol ethics, co2 emissions

Can't have your corn and eat it too Mr. President!

Ethanol ethics, quite frankly, I never saw the point of ethanol. It does, however, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 20 percent. It also reduces gas mileage, by as much as 33 percent (E10), and it also costs as much as .74 btu of fossil fuel for every 1 btu of energy, so that is only a 26 percent gain in energy produced, and that energy is fossil fuel based, so that means more greenhouse gases to produce it. Another factor to consider is that for every increase in ethanol mixtures for our gasoline, there also comes a reduction in miles per gallon, thus, more cost to us as consumers. It also is a conflict of interests, and serious conflicts for that matter. The battle for food resources comes into play, as more resources are being used to produce ethanol for energy, less can be used for human and animal food production. That conflict alone must bring ethics into the management of ethanol policies for the U.S. and what impact our policies have on the worlds food supply. Continue Reading Ethanol Ethics Here
