Alykhan Velshi: Let Them Eat Carbon

Michael Sinclair: Let Them Eat Carbon

Michael Sinclair: Let Them Eat Carbon because all around us, there are growing signs of environmental devastation and destruction: coal power plants in China spewing toxic chemicals into the air and water; deforestation and illegal poaching across the African continent; environmentally short-sighted, government-mandated sprawl, which has made walkable urban-ism illegal in much of North America. Unfortunately, the policy response has been uninspired. More taxes, more subsidy, more regulations. And when the medicine fails to work? More taxes, more subsidy, more regulations. It’s time for some fresh ideas.

Let Them Eat Carbon, the provocative new book by my friend Matthew Sinclair of the UK Taxpayers’ Alliance, injects a welcome dose of original thinking into contemporary environmental debates. It is a wake-up call for those of us who care about the natural and built environment, but worry that we are paying more for less; those of us who, despite handing over more and more in green taxes and fees, see our communities becoming less liveable, the natural environment more polluted.

Worlds Healthiest Foods: The Healthiest Superfoods on the Earth

This girl is all smiles while carrying her superfoods from the worlds healthiest foods list

The worlds healthiest foods can vary according to your geographic location. For some of us, some exotic foods may just either be unattainable, or just too expensive. For the most part, however, there are local foods and foods right at the local grocery store or farmers market that would fit into this category very nicely.

While there are many good foods located most anywhere food can be grown around the world, there is one thing to consider when developing a healthy diet, which is to eat whole foods with minimal processing, which is very important in the worlds healthiest foods.

Most people don’t eat right, whether it be lack of time, lack of money, or a taste for unhealthy foods, it is a problem for many. They also have new diets that come out just about every week, and some of those are not healthy, and most won’t work for most people.

People who are not living in developed nations and that eat diets like those of their ancestors and thrive on high protein, high fat diets such as the Inuit of Greenland; low protein, high carb diets like the southern Africa indigenous people; diets with high intake of raw milk and cream, such as the Loetschental Valley of Switzerland; diets that are high in saturated fats like that of the Tobriand Islanders; and even diets that consider animal blood a staple such as that of the Massai from Kenya and Tanzania. These less sophisticated dieters have thrived on these diets for centuries without the ravages of degenerative diseases that have become epidemics in modernized worlds, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, neurodegenerative diseases, osteoporosis and cancer. Rolf’s Patisserie recalling all desserts made after November 1
Baked goods and pastries may be repackaged, sold under other labels

Fast Facts

* Rolf’s Patisserie, a gourmet European style bakery located in Lincolnwood, Ill., is recalling all desserts made after Nov. 1, 2010. The products include tiramisu, cakes, cobblers, decorated cookies, tarts, pastries, and pies.
* The desserts have been connected to several outbreaks of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) food poisoning.
* Because Rolf’s Patisserie sells the desserts in both retail and wholesale markets, as well as online and to institutions, the products may not carry a Rolf’s Patisserie label.
* A food item contaminated with S. aureus, the bacterium responsible for producing toxins in foods, can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea. The illness usually lasts for one to two days, although severe cases may last as long as three days. However, certain individuals, such as the elderly or very young, may require medical treatment for dehydration.
* Consumers should not eat the desserts and should dispose of them in a sealed container so that people and animals (including wild animals) cannot get access to and eat them.

Salad Bars Unhealthy

Salad Bars Unhealthy so beware

Salad bars unhealthy, and while undercooked meat and eggs tend to raise red flags among restaurant-goers, these bars may actually pose just as much if not more risk of food-borne illness. This is not necessarily the result of the owners and employees of the salad bar (although sometimes it is); often, lettuce becomes contaminated during processing, before it ever reaches the bar. And customers’ unsanitary behavior also contributes to making these unsafe.

Salad Bar Recycling

Recycling is a good thing, but not necessarily with regard to produce. Many salad bar operators remove the trays of food at the end of the day and, rather than throwing out the old food and beginning with fresh food in the morning, the trays and containers are stacked in the refrigerator overnight.
