Columbus Day has different meanings for different cultures

Columbus Day is Monday, October 11th 2010, and what the heck is it? For most of us it means that the Post Office is closed and no mail, some banks and businesses are closed, and school is off for some students. Most of the benefits of the holiday are a long weekend, sales, parades and some parties and outings. Elsewhere, the day is celebrated as Dia de la Raza in many countries in the Americas, Dia de las Culturas in Costa Rica, Discovery Day in the Bahamas, Dia de la Hispanidad and Fiesta Nacional in Spain, and as Dia de las Americas in Uruguay. Most of these holidays have been unofficially celebrated since the late 1700′s.

The original intent was to honor the discoverer and explorer Christopher Columbus, whom, by most records, discovered America on October 12th, 1492. We now know that he did not really discover America for the world, he was the first European to set foot on American soil, as the native Americans were already here long before he ever arrived at our doorstep. Many gardeners choose their plants based on what “look” they want to achieve, or other desired benefits. However, that approach does not take native species into account. There are so many reasons to choose native species over mass-produced, ubiquitous landscape plants. Here are some of those reasons.

1. Pest Resistance

These plants are much more resistant to pests. Do you know someone who grows hybrid roses or tropical imports? They are probably always fighting June beetles and other pests. These plants, on the other hand, grow naturally in your area. Continue Reading Native Plants Why We Should Garden With Them Here
