Asian Oil Takeover? PetroChina Buys Out MacKay River Oil Sands Project In Canada

Asian oil takeover? PetroChina became the first Chinese state-owned company to wholly own MacKay River Oil Sands Project in Canada, a Canadian oil sands development after agreeing on Tuesday to buy out its partner’s stake in a newly approved project for $680 million Canadian dollars and $674 million US dollars.

Calgary-based Athabasca Oil Sands Corp said it exercised an option to sell its 40 percent interest in the MacKay River project in northern Alberta to PetroChina so it could free up money to concentrate on some of its other oil sands and light crude projects.

After the project won regulatory approvals last week, the partners had 30 days to decide to exercise put and call options on Athabasca’s stake. They have a similar arrangement with a larger, nearby project still awaiting a go-ahead from regulators. Continue Reading Asian Oil Takeover? Non-Toxic Cleaning Products Make Your Own Non-Toxic Multi-Purpose Cleaner

Non-Toxic Cleaning Products Make Your Own Toxin Free Multi-Purpose Cleaner

Non-toxic cleaning products make your own toxin free multi-purpose cleaner, so if you spill something on your counter or floor, you probably have some sort of “all-purpose cleaner” that you reach for, and it’s most likely in a spray bottle. But some of those chemical-laden cleaners are questionable at best and dangerous at worst – their labels are festooned with warnings about accidental ingestion, inhalation of fumes, eye contact, skin contact, etc. However, you can use the empty containers of these cleaners to hold your own home-made cleaners. Just make sure that you dispose of the contents responsibly (contact your local EPA or solid waste authority) and wash out the bottle thoroughly if you choose to re-use. You make also purchase some empty all-purpose spray bottles at your local store, and make sure there are no toxic remnants in them.

Here are three recipes for all-purpose, toxin free cleaners for your home. Two of them are sprays and the other is a creamy scrubber. While they don not have toxins as far as cleaners go, it’s not a good idea to ingest them or let your toddler get into them unsupervised (after all, these recipes smell yummy!). But these cleaners are safe enough for your children to help you clean with your supervision. Continue Reading Non-Toxic Cleaning Products Make Your Own Non-Toxic Multi-Purpose Cleaner Here

Fracking Responsible For Earthquakes? Rare Ohio Earthquake May Prove It!

Is fracking responsible for earthquakes? The latest Ohio earthquake, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake in Ohio on New Year’s Eve did not occur naturally according to an expert hired by the state, and also stated that it may have been caused by high-pressure liquid injection related to oil and gas exploration and production by the process of fracking, the expert stated on Tuesday.

Ohio’s Department of Natural Resources on Sunday suspended operations at five deep well sites in Youngstown, Ohio, where the injection of water was taking place, while they evaluate seismological data from a rare quake in the area. The wells are each roughly 9,000 feet deep, or almost 2 miles, and are used to dispose of the waste water from oil and gas wells. The process is directly related to fracking, which is the controversial injection of chemical-laced water and sand into shale rocks to release the oil and gas contained in them. Critics of the fracking process say that the high pressure injection of the liquid causes seismic activity. Continue Reading Fracking Responsible For Earthquakes? Rare Ohio Earthquake May Prove It! Recycle Aluminum – How, Where and Why Recycle Aluminum?

Recycle aluminum cans is one of the best things you can do to help the environment!

Recycle aluminum is an important recycling measure. If you happen to be one of the many Americans who tossed your soda or other beverage cans into a recycling bin last year, give yourself a pat on the back. You have just helped in saving millions of barrels of oil. The U.S. recycling rate for aluminum beverage cans has reached its highest level in more than a decade, with 58.1 percent of all cans recycled in 2010, according to the Aluminum Association, Can Manufacturers Institute and Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries.

Americans recycled nearly 56 billion aluminum cans in 2010, and seeing that it takes 95 percent less energy to produce a can from recycled materials than to make one from raw materials, the increase in recycling meant a lot less oil had to be used! The amount of energy saved from aluminum can recycling in 2010 is equal to the energy equivalent of 17 million barrels of crude oil or nearly two days of all U.S. oil imports. Oil Spills - Worst Oil Spills List Man Made Disasters List Part 4 - Ixtoc Oil Spill

Oil spills are one of the worst man-made disasters when it comes to both man and animals as well as the environment. The oil is released in the form of liquid petroleum hydrocarbons. These spills typically are caused by man made errors or carelessness, and have a devastating effect to the local environment, especially when they occur in water such as the oceans. There are several other causes for spills, such as equipment malfunctions, however proper maintenance should eliminate most of these occurrences.

For animals, particularly birds, the oil from oil spills permeates into the structure of the plumage of birds and animals, thus reducing their insulating ability. This in turn, leads the birds more vulnerable to temperature fluctuations, and much less buoyancy in the water, and also in payers or disables the bird’s flight abilities to forage and escape from their predators. While they still preen while covered by the oil, the birds typically ingest the oil that is covering their feathers, which causes kidney damage, altered liver functionality, and irritation to the digestive tract. Most birds that are affected by oil spills will ultimately die unless humans rescue them. Studies have shown that even after rescue from oil spills and cleaning that only 1% of the oil soaked birds will survive.
