Zero Energy Home How Do They Work?

energy,home,zeh,grid,solar,needs,use,water,zero,builders,zero energy home

Home designs that result in little to no outside energy needs are becoming more popular

A zero energy home (ZEH) is one where all of the energy needs for the household are supplied by alternative means. It does not mean a home that uses no electricity. Solar panels and solar water heating systems are generally the form of energy employed by these homes, because they are residential. Residential wind turbines are uncommon in most communities neighborhoods.

These types of homes need some sort of back-up. It is not actually an “off the grid” home. The sun is not always shining, and sometimes a home’s energy needs drastically increase for a variety of reasons (a cold snap, a heat wave, or an increase in laundry). In fact, zero energy homes remain connected to the utility grid, and often engage in net metering. Continue Reading Zero Energy Home How Do They Work? Here

Renewable and Non Renewable Energy Sources Explained

Renewable and Non Renewable Energy Sources Explained

Renewable and non renewable energy sources explained will help you to understand the differences between the two and determine which is better. For this explanation, we are referring to electrical energy or energy to run our vehicles, boats, and other forms of transportation. The two combined are the driving factors behind both our economy and our society as a whole, for without either we would almost be back in the dark ages so to speak.

That day will come when we will be without coal and oil, however there are alternative sources of energy available to us which we are finally beginning to utilize more of. Fossil fuels are not good for the environment so to help protect our planet, it is wise for us to move forward with alternative energy for our future energy needs. Solar Power Advantages and Disadvantages Explained

Solar power advantages and disadvantages can help to explain why it is not a more common power source in our society. Let us begin to explain why it isn’t more of a mainstream energy source today than we would like it to be.

For starters, the initial costs are expensive, however, Solar Power Prices Are Falling Quickly, and expected to be less expensive than the grid by 2015 in certain locations. Another point to consider as to why solar is not more mainstream yet is that Fossil Fuel Subsidies are six times more than renewable energy, at the least. If all tax breaks and other aid is included in calculating fossil fuel subsidies, that figure is even higher! One good thing to note here, in 2010 the US had a 186% increase from 2007 in US renewable energy subsidies . Even after the Solyndra failure, Obama Stands by Renewable Energy Aid, which shows he is doing what he can to help the environment amidst an increasingly arrogant and anti-environment right wing movement. Greenhouse Gases Cause of Global Warming, Not Sun Activity New NASA Report Confirms

Solar Cycle

A prolonged solar minimum left the sun's surface nearly free of sunspots and accompanying bright areas called faculae between 2005 and 2010. Total solar irradiance declined slightly as a result, but the Earth continued to absorb more energy than it emit throughout the minimum. An animation of a full solar cycle is available here. (Credit: NASA Goddard's Scientific Visualization Studio)

Greenhouse gases are confirmed as the cause of global warming, not sun activity according to a recent NASA report. The recent, prolonged minimal in sun activity did not prevent the Earth from absorbing more solar energy than it let escape back into space, a recent NASA analysis of the Earth’s energy budget indicates. The study, Earth’s energy imbalance and implications, appeared in the Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics journal in December, 2011.

In a real brief summary, the study concluded:

Improving observations of ocean heat content show that Earth is absorbing more energy from the Sun than it is radiating to space as heat, even during the recent solar minimum. The inferred planetary energy imbalance, 0.58±0.15Wm−2 during the 6-yr period 2005–2010, confirms the dominant role of the human-made greenhouse effect in driving global climate change.

This imbalance is the primary driver for global warming, since more energy is coming in than leaving and, because it occurred during a period when the sun was emitting comparatively low levels of energy, the imbalance has implications for the cause of global warming. The results of the study confirm greenhouse gases produced by human activities are the most important driver of global climate change, according to the researchers. The largest solar storm is hitting us now as a result of Sunday nights solar flare, the largest since 2005. The solar flare occurred at about 11 p.m. EST Sunday Jan 22, 2012 and will hit Earth with three different effects at three different times. The biggest issue is radiation, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado.

The sun is bombarding Earth with radiation from the biggest sun event in more than six years with more to come from the fast-moving eruption. The radiation, which comes in the form of protons, erupted out of the sun and are traveling at 93 million miles per hour.

The radiation is mostly a concern for satellite disruptions and astronauts in space. It can cause communication problems for polar-traveling airplanes, said space weather center physicist Doug Biesecker.

Radiation from Sunday’s solar flare arrived at Earth an hour later and will likely continue through Wednesday. Levels are considered strong but other storms have been more severe. There are two higher levels of radiation on NOAA’s storm scale — severe and extreme — Biesecker said. Still, this storm is the strongest for radiation since May 2005.
