Republicans Punish Needy Women, Children and Poor With FDA - USDA Budget Cuts

The Republicans are again trying to punish the poor and needy, including children with proposed cuts to spending for the Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration which the House of Representatives passed Tuesday. U.S. Rep. George Miller, the senior Democrat on the Education and the Workforce Committee, issued a statement after the Republican led House of Representatives passed the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food & Drug Administration and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2012. He stated that this legislation makes harmful cuts to the Women, Infants and Children program (WIC), and threatens the quality and nutrition of the school meals program. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimated that the bill would cut 400 to 550 thousand eligible low-income women and infant children from the WIC program.

Another harrowing development from this new act of the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food & Drug Administration and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2012 is the fact that it also reduces aid to the Commodity Supplemental Food Program, and reduce federal support for food banks, thus putting more at risk women, infants, children, and elderly adults at-risk. These newest Republican led budget cuts would undermine efforts to prevent hunger and support sound nutrition for some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

The new bill also goes so far as to literally put the new FDA food safety law passed late last year out of reach, and the USDA’s meat inspection as well as USDA conservation programs, so make sure you cook your meat well! These budget cuts to those two programs should be of major concern to everyone, as they are skimping on food safety, something which can prove deadly, to say the least.

According to U.S. Rep. George Miller, “The Republicans also roll back important and historic substantive changes we made to the school meals program last Congress. For millions of children, the meals they eat at school serve as a nutritional safety net – denying these children healthy options at school is just another example of House Republicans choosing to prioritize oil companies and big business instead of the children who need our help the most.

He went on to say, “Once again, House Republicans are out of touch with reality and they are putting our kids in danger. This is just one of numerous actions the Republicans are taking that will hurt this nation’s children’s well-being and achievement. In this economy, we have to make tough choices when it comes to government spending. But time and time again, Republicans are choosing to make those choices on the backs of children and hard working American families.”

Granted, budgets need to be cut, but we shouldn’t put it on the backs of the most vulnerable, which Republicans are well known for. Instead of eliminating funds, eliminate waste first, and return the extra cash. Government is out of control, which is of their own doing, and now they want the least self-defensible people to pick up the slack in hard times, while they spoil their big energy supporters, defense contractors, and other mega-corporations with tax breaks and other special deals. Get a grip man, this is not a game on Facebook, these are real people and real lives that you are literally threatening. When will the madness end? Call your Senators and tell them this is a terrible way to fix the budget, a cheap, not well thought out, and easy way out for the fat cats in defense and other areas of government that need to have their budgets slashed. Don’t hurt the already hurting! Peace my friends and keep fighting the good fight!
